Evaluating an IoT system – metrics and how to measure
Technical acceptance and economic criteria for investors and farmers alike.
Updated:

Evaluation has two parts: does it work (technical) and is it worth it (economic). Both need a control baseline, not impressions.
Steps
- 1
Technical acceptance
Devices online ≥ 98% of the time; sensor error vs. a reference meter ≤ 5%; rules run correctly in an unplugged test.
- 2
Operating metrics
Water, power and fertiliser per kg of produce; care hours per week; missed alerts.
- 3
Production metrics
Yield per m² or per tank, grade-A share, losses, crops per year.
- 4
Economics
Extra profit − system running cost = net benefit/year; payback = investment ÷ net benefit. Try assumptions with the ROI calculator on the Quote page.
- 5
Regular reports
NG Farm exports a PDF each season comparing with the previous crop and the control block.
