Raising black apple snails in lined tanks with IoT
Tank prep, stocking, feeding, water management – and how sensors cut losses.
Updated:
Black apple snails suit converted rice land and mixed gardens in the Mekong Delta. The parameters below summarise common technical guidance; adjust to your water source and local extension advice.
Main materials
- 4 × 8 m frame tank, 0.5 mm HDPE liner
- Water hyacinth and morning glory for cover
- Aerator, pH–DO–temperature sensor
Steps
- 1
Prepare the tank
Water depth 0.5–0.8 m; bottom drain and mesh guard against escapes. Shade part of the surface.
- 2
Condition the water
Hold pH 7.0–8.5, 22–30 °C and dissolved oxygen above 4 mg/L. Sensors measure continuously and alert on drift.
- 3
Stock
Choose uniform, healthy juveniles; reference density 80–100 per m², stocked in the cool of morning or evening.
- 4
Feed
Greens plus pellets; ration tapers from 5–6% to 2–3% of body weight. Log feeds in the app.
- 5
Manage water with IoT
Aerators start automatically when DO drops, especially 2–5 a.m. Change 20–30% of water when pH or turbidity cross limits.
- 6
Harvest
After 3–4 months snails reach about 30 per kg; target survival 75–80%.
Tips from NG engineers
- • Golden apple snails are an invasive pest – never mix them in.
